From Next Door to Next Level: Seamless Expansion at Scotts

Overview

About Scotts

Scotts is a third-generation, West Australian-owned print and communications group trusted by government, schools and corporates.

Nearly a century after opening its doors in 1930, the business has evolved from a traditional press house into a full-suite creative and production partner, with in-house design, offset and digital print, and large-format signage under one roof.

Leadership today sits with John and Tim Scott, who continue the family legacy while modernising operations and services.

Quality and sustainability are embedded into how Scotts works, with recognised accreditations that underpin consistent colour, reliable delivery and lower environmental impact.

This combination of craft, technology and standards has made Scotts a go-to communications partner for Perth organisations that need on-brand creative and no-drama production.

The CHALLENGE

Expand the Studio without Interrupting Production

As demand grew, Scotts expanded its creative capacity into an adjacent office to house a larger design and signage team. The brief for TechBrain was simple to say and hard to do.

Deliver a production-ready foundation for the new space that felt like a seamless extension of head office, with zero disruption to live jobs. That meant getting wired and wireless networking, inter-office connectivity and voice services working from day one, while designers kept producing proofs and the print floor kept running to schedule.

The environment we walked into was mixed and busy. Around 40 to 50 endpoints spanned macOS for colour-critical work and Windows for administration and production. There was an established Vocus-hosted VoIP platform that needed to keep working without call quality issues.

Any cutover window had to respect press time and dispatch commitments. Success would be measured in what did not happen. No downtime, no noisy tickets, no broken colour workflows and no rework.

The new studio also needed to scale, so adding desks or devices would not trigger another re-architecture or create support friction for the Scotts team.

Our SOLUTION

Build One Network Fabric Across Two Sites

We treated the new studio as a second node on the same fabric, engineered for speed, reliability and low-touch operation.

TechBrain organised and supervised a fibre optic link between the two buildings for high-bandwidth, low-latency inter-office connectivity. We supplied and installed a tidy switching layer for the studio, then deployed two enterprise-grade wireless access points and introduced a central wireless controller to manage both locations under one policy set.

Network design followed clear segments for prepress, admin and print devices, with appropriate VLANs and access controls. We validated quality of service so the existing Vocus-hosted VoIP performed cleanly across sites, and we simplified desk phone provisioning to reduce setup time.

On the endpoint side, we aligned configurations with the way Scotts works, so macOS colour workflows remained stable and Windows users enjoyed predictable performance. Every change was staged and smoke tested, then scheduled after hours to avoid press windows.

We onboarded the environment into TechBrain monitoring and documented the build for easy growth, handover and ongoing support.

THE OUTCOME

Day-One Productivity & a Scalable Base for Growth

The studio went live on schedule with no disruption to production. Staff moved into the new space and got straight to work. Calls flowed, files synced and Wi-Fi just worked.

Post cutover there were no support tickets attributable to the move, which is exactly what a fast-paced print house needs when deadlines are not negotiable. The fibre link removed the friction of large file transfers between sites, while unified wireless and a consistent switching stack improved day-to-day reliability for everyone.

Beyond a smooth launch, Scotts now has a scalable and supportable base to keep growing its design and signage capability without repeating the exercise each time. Adding desks is straightforward, extending wireless coverage is predictable and voice services remain stable.

The project also supported a broader business goal. Protecting the brand equity that comes from consistent quality and on-time delivery by reducing operational risk during change.

In short, TechBrain delivered the IT foundation for growth, while keeping the presses running.
